Geriatric Nursing Collaboration
with Saint Mary’s College
Saint Mary’s College has partnered with GuideStar Eldercare to create an innovative offering within its Doctor of Nursing Practice program: a geriatric neuropsychiatry certificate. The new offering equips graduates with specialized skills to provide older adult patients with the care and attention they need to lead healthy, independent lives.
“We are proud to partner with Saint Mary’s to fill a crucial gap in advanced training for nursing and DNP professionals,” said Steven L. Posar MD, Founder, CEO, and CMO of GuideStar Eldercare. The new program will advance cutting-edge, research-backed geriatric care, building a new cohort of nursing practitioners who will be equipped to diagnose and treat geriatric neuropsychiatric illnesses such as dementia.
“We are ushering in a new era of geriatric nursing,” added Posar. “Our mission-driven educational collaboration will have far-reaching effects on how we ease suffering of vulnerable elders. We can and will advance the well-being of seven million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias.”
The program is the first of its kind in the nation. Dr. Posar serves as a Clinical Professor of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry at the college and has been instrumental in supporting development of the curriculum. Executives from GuideStar Eldercare are also professors in the program: Daniel Heiser, PsyD., Senior Vice President, Behavioral Health; and Anita Arthur, MSN, APN, FNP-BC, GNP-BC, Senior Vice President, Nurse Practitioner Services. The Steven L. Posar MD Eldercare Foundation has provided generous funding to support establishment of the program.
GuideStar Eldercare uses neurology-based behavioral health interventions to develop effective person-centered approaches to treat a wide range of psychological and psychiatric brain disorders,” explains Saint Mary’s College program details. “The GuideStar program at Saint Mary’s trains nurse practitioners to properly diagnose and identify age-related illnesses, and treat their patients using a combination of neurology, neuropsychiatry and gerontology,” they add. The program launched in August 2024.
